Stop Giving Others Your Crumbs

The other week I was once again inspired by the remarkable wisdom my dear friend Dr. Salna Smith shared about "unbusying" yourself. It was too good not to share with you here. I hope it acts to transform your life into a direction that is most powerful yet nourishing for YOU - it certainly did for me...
Lately I’ve been acutely aware of how those around me use their time.
The common theme seems to be a focus on how busy they can be. These are the people you ask ‘how are you doing?’ and the first thing out of their mouths is ‘oh (sigh), I’m SO busy’. They wear it like a badge of honor. Their anxious energy is palpable.
We are a culture of cortisol – we feed off of stress. The more we can cram into a day, however unimportant and trivial, is synonymous with how productive we are. How valued we are. But my friends, this is a trap.
The fastest way to spiral your health downwards is to STRESS. The higher our stress hormones (cortisol and adrenaline - I’m simplifying here a bit), the quicker we burn through all our hormones. This means that if you want to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, have weight that won’t move, be irritable, anxious and not feel rested in the morning, by all means, over-schedule yourself.
We all know these people. Maybe you are one. They’re busy to say they’re busy yet are balls of stress.
This way of living often works…until it doesn’t. Everyone’s threshold for stress is different and the amount of emotional stress along with physical stressors (ie acid reflux, menstrual irregularities, acne etc) all lead to a breakdown in the hormone pathways that help us manage how our bodies respond to stress.
You’ve heard it before but I’ll shout it from the rooftops one more time. SELFCARE IS NOT SELF-ISH!! It’s the key that unlocks our body’s ability to regenerate, heal and balance hormones. The hormones that allow us to be our best selves, to give selflessly and to feel good. Who doesn’t want to feel good on the regular? C’MON!
When you refuel (mentally and physically), you’ll stop handing out crumbs and start feeling your full potential to give (in whatever form that is for you). And MAN, does it feel good. So much so that you’ll want to take off that ‘busy’ badge and you’ll hear yourself saying ‘no’ more often. Because saying no means you are slotting time for a priority ‘yes’ (coffee with a friend or dare-I-say-it, but… a nap (gasp)).
It’s quite simple. And while I’m sure it feels foreign to some of you, trust me, it just takes practice.
I’m Dr. Salna Smith, Naturopathic Doctor and owner of www.kaleandcoffee.ca. I work with high achieving women who feel drained, overwhelmed and are tired of DIY’ing their own health and not getting results. I tailor health plans using lab testing and a detailed work up so these hard working souls can regain a sustainable energy, feel recharged and ready to tackle their priorities head on again!
So my challenge for you lovelies is to use the next two weeks to get ‘unbusy’ (yup, it’s a thing) and REMOVE an item per day off your schedule. Replace it with something that makes your heart smile. Something that fills you up and makes you feel lighter.
Because when you feel happy and healthy, you stop giving from a deficit and instead, giving comes from this shiny, sweet, soul-filled space that is tangible to those around you. And that is the true fuel that feeds our wellbeing.
With Laughter & Leafy Green Love,
Dr. Salna Smith, ND
