When all Things Trending Meet Natural Beauty: Esker Blows Up
Shannon Davenport is a serious trend-setter. Or rather - she understands trends inside-out, and these keen insights were the fuel to her Esker Beauty empire.
For those of you who aren’t yet familiar, Esker Beauty is the latest and greatest in natural beauty care essentials - they offer an artfully crafted line of face-grade and functional plant-based botanical oils that go above and beyond your standard ‘moisturizer’. After over a year in R&D, the brand is officially booming, with a launch Jenni Kayne and now recently stocked by Goop - people can’t get enough of these heavenly oils.
- Today's trend forecasts include a surge in mindfulness, DIY entrepreneurs + small brands, natural > conventional.
- Essential oils cannot be generalized as all good or all bad - proper blending and use (especially with a quality carrier oil) is key.
- Squalane is the new up-and-coming first choice carrier oil (one of Esker's main ingredients).
- Oils are an ancient tried-and-true practice for ultimate hydration, whereas creams are emulsified and hence provide less intense moisturization.
- Shannon's ultimate self-care regime: taking a great big BATH.
That should come as no surprise to Shannon, who, as I hinted at - is an expert in all things trends. After growing up in the Bay area of California, she moved to New York where she worked for over 10 years in trends - working with some huge brands in areas such as fashion, food, and of course beauty.
What did she learn?
Small startups are where it’s at → entrepreneurs are a force to be reckoned with!
Mindfulness is key.
Mainstream health and beauty is shifting towards embracing more holistic and natural alternatives.
Reflecting on these findings, alongside a love of natural beauty, she decided to explore the territory further and become an expert in a totally different field separate from business: aromatherapy! Shannon soon after graduated from the New York Institute of Aromatic Studies and realized that there was a gap in the market, which she was only too happy to fill: luxury body oils powered by the finest in plant ingredients.
Shannon knew getting to market soon was important - but wasn’t about to sacrifice diligence in testing for a quick sale. She spent a full year and a half getting the formulas “just right” - ensuring they each had a distinct aroma, weren’t too greasy, and of course - that they were as clean as possible. While it’s a shame that many bodycare products seem to be more of an afterthought - taking advantage of the ‘trendiness’ of one or a few key ingredients and using ‘fillers’ to support the overall creation - that is simply NOT the case with Esker Beauty.
The line is simple yet intentful:
The Firming Oil is based around juniper and grapefruit, which helps move fluid under the skin.
The Restorative Oil features carrot seed, which is powerfully anti-aging and has countless healing properties.
The Clarifying Oil highlights cypress, which also aids in moving fluids, healing blemishes, and is especially good for reducing the appearance of varicose veins.
Now it’s important to understand the truth behind essential oils - which have started to get a bad rap lately. Shannon clarifies that blanket statements about essential oils are simply not useful. Lumping together ‘all essential oils’ is like generalizing ALL herbs as simply good or bad - they are each so different, and while some are good for some things, others may need to be used sparingly or not at all. Same logic applies for essential oils applied topically. With that said, Shannon mentions that it’s really a matter of proper blending, specifically with the right carrier oil.
While coconut oil was all the rage a little while back, the new oil in town is arguably even better, and to no surprise - it’s the carrier oil in all of Esker Beauty’s exquisite body oils.
The secret (trendy!) ingredient?
I first learned about Squalane through DECIEM - it’s a saturated and stable hydrocarbon that is found naturally in the skin. It has very high emollience, is an exceptional hydrator and can prevent ongoing loss of hydration that impairs dermal suppleness. Squalane is non-comedogenic and is suitable for use on all skin types.
Now, I know what you’re thinking - why oils over creams or butters? What makes the oil so special - and so trendy?
Well, trends aside - let’s consider plain old science. While Shannon certainly doesn’t rain on body lotion’s parade, it’s a fact that oil is fundamentally a more moisture-rich formula - it's the purest way to support rich hydration, and its an ancient tried-and-true practice. Creams are emulsified products - and thus water and air are involved. Oils are...oils.
So what’s does the Founder of these beautifully branded and just as functionally nourishing oils do for her own self-care practice?
Well, she’s BIG on baths.
As a new momma, Shannon admits that she doesn’t get a lot of ‘me time’ - but baths (even if it’s just a quickie!) are something she finds time for - at least every other day.
“There’s something special about taking a bath, getting clean - for both your body and your mind.” She shares.
That actually leads me into a special mini-announcement...as Esker Beauty is actually hard at work in their plant-powered lab to start rolling out a new product line of body washes - for use in you guessed it - the all-time self-care practice of long (or short) baths!
Stay tuned for the product roll-out, but for now, I definitely recommend try one - or all three - of these divinely crafted body oil. Canadian friends: Goop ships FREE!
